Maryam Safi is from Kabul, Afghanistan; she has a Bachelors Degree in Islamic Law from Kabul University and is currently studying for a Masters degree in Social Change & Peace Building at Future Generations Graduate School and US Institute of Peace. With her education and learning Maryam hopes to apply her developed skills for the benefit of her community in Afghanistan.
Her ambition is to work for the benefit of her country, helping her fellow Afghans realize their empowerment to lead the country towards peace. Maryam would especially like to work on issues effecting women and children because she believes these two categories are the most vulnerable and deprived through the years.
In her Voices for Peace picture Maryam describes peace as the unity of human beings, she gives us this poem in Dari by the poet Saadee Shirazi
Translated this poem means
Human beings are members of one another,
The creation of all is from the same essence.
If one part feel the pain in a time,
The other parts may not rest.
If you are not suffering the grief of others,
You cannot be called human being.
For Maryam this poem describes peacefully that to achieve peace we must have the unity of human beings.
