Editor’s note: The following is a poem written by one of our students.

I feel the cold deep within my bones
A deathly anguish courses through my veins
and my face twists in agony
I repeat to myself
I am an Afghan girl
I am still here, standing on this soil
In a desert of hopelessness
My fate is shaped by my physical fragility
A destiny born of a thousand words
Yet written for me with a single, emotionless sentence:
“You Are a girl.”
I move forward,
like a crack emerging from the heart of the earth, I rise.
Above the darkness, like the fiery words of
Forough Farrokhzad
And the unparalleled courage of
Benuzir Bhutto
I will rise, shattering all borders.
I rise ❤︎
